iFeatures Funding for Emerging Writers and Directors

By Funding, Training, Uncategorized No Comments

iFeatures, a premier UK filmmaking programme, is offering development funding for the UK’s emerging  writers, directors, and writer/directors. It is currently driving the development of low-budget, high-quality debut features from the most outstanding, daring and distinctive storytellers. The programme is run by Creative England and supported by the BFI, BBC Films and the ScreenSkills Film Skills Fund with contributions from UK film productions.

As well as receiving development funding, selected teams take part in an intensive, exploratory 10-month programme. This includes residential Lab events, dedicated support and access to industry and networks, plus mentoring and high-level training with established industry professionals. Following the programme, BFI and BBC Films have committed to at least three of the projects progressing to production.

The programme targets emerging writers or directors across the UK who have yet to make a funded feature film, and at producers who are still at an emerging stage of their career. We look for creative talent whose work has already garnered positive industry and/or public attention. This includes short films, theatre, TV, web, art film, video gaming, commercials/advertising, graphic novels or music promos.

iFeatures believes that low-budget, ambitious, well-told stories can achieve critical, audience and commercial success. Multi-award winning and acclaimed films developed through the lab have included iFeatures productions ApostasyLady MacbethThe Levelling, and The Goob, as well as further films such as God’s Own Country, Adult Life Skills and Pin Cushion.

Bumble's Female Film Force

Bumble’s Female Film Force 2019 – Apply by March 20

By Funding, Uncategorized No Comments

Last year, Bumble’s Female Film Force was an unprecedented success, Bumble has decided to do it again in 2019 — but they’re taking it international.

Bumble is expanding their initiative, which offers grants to aspiring women filmmakers, to include France and Germany. It will again include the UK, where the inaugural competition yielded 1,100 pitches. Here is what they have to say:

About Bumble’s Female Film Force 2019

Once again, we’ll give five female teams (writers, directors, or producers) £20,000 each to make a short film. They must have a theme rooted in Bumble’s values of kindness, respect, and equality.

So, why are we doing this? Look no further than this past awards season — or, indeed, any in the film industry’s history. In February, the Academy Awards bestowed Oscars overwhelmingly to men (73% of winners). Across the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, every Best Director nominee was a man.

At this year’s BAFTAs, only a third of the winners were women (34%). In France, only one woman, Jane Campion, has ever received the Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes. That is during its 70-year history. And in Germany, only about 15% of films shown in cinemas are directed by women. In the last 17 years of the Berlinale, only four women have won the Golden Bear.

We want to do our part to help redress this gender imbalance.

How to Apply to Bumble’s Female Film Force

To enter, women across the UK, Ireland, France and Germany can download Bumble, head into Bumble Bizz, our professional networking mode, and match with the Female Film Force application card. We encourage anyone who identifies as a woman to apply.

Applications for Round One of Bumble’s Female Film Force will close on March 20th. We will then announce a shortlist, and filmmakers will need to submit further materials to support their ideas.

Then, our team will ask ten teams to pitch to our industry panel in London in May.

Bumble will announce the five chosen teams in June, with films delivered in January 2020. We will showcase those films at an exclusive industry event.

Over the production period, our five filmmakers will also receive guidance from leading industry experts as part of a bespoke mentorship programme created in partnership with WDW Entertainment and Female Film Force Producer Elisabeth Hopper.

A panel of industry experts from France, Germany and the UK will judge the submissions to find our teams of women ready to bring their stories to life.

Uncertain Kingdom Launches Short Film Funding

By Funding No Comments

Uncertain Kingdom has remarked that in 2019, Britain will be on the brink of a momentous new decade. The 2020’s will see the making or breaking of nations, unions and the Earth itself. However given the long lead times on features, they believe the filmmaking community could miss out on a chance to engage and comment.

To bypass this, the group is using short films – with faster turnaround, lower budgets and greater creative freedom- to ensure filmmakers can contribute to the conversation. The Uncertain Kingdom will give 20 filmmaking teams up to £10k each to make a short film. These films must be entertaining, original and relevant to the UK in 2019. Whether political or personal, macro or micro, all of the films must give a bright flash of insight into how the filmmakers see the UK now.

The Uncertain Kingdom is aimed at experienced filmmaking and storytelling teams with confidently executed, accomplished work under their belts. Up to ten teams will be selected via an open application. Filmmakers have final cut, with the Uncertain Kingdom team having minimal involvement in script development and the edit. There’s no training element to the project, so candidates need to be confident they can deliver. Producers and directors must have completed at least one short film (together as a team or individually). If you have significant experience in theatre, TV, artist moving image or other area of storytelling and you have an idea for a film, your application is welcome.

The Uncertain Kingdom is an inclusive project and actively encourages applications from people of all backgrounds. If you are a filmmaker with an idea, please read the Uncertain Kingdom’s guidelines. Please also get in touch if you have any queries. Applications open on Monday 14th January 2019 and close at midnight on Sunday 3rd February.

Film Hub Midlands Offering Funding to Exhibitors

By Funding No Comments

Film Hub Midlands is creating more opportunities for audiences across the Midlands to engage with the widest range of film in as many places as possible with its Pitch Pots initiative. The fund is open to exhibitors throughout the year, and will close once the available funds have been awarded. Below is an outline of the project:

Film Hub Midlands’ Pitch Pots are available to help support a risk and try something new. Whether you are new to film exhibition and want to put on your first screening or an established cinema or community screen who wants to trial a new type of programming, we want to help audiences in the Midlands engage with the widest range of film in as many places as possible. We will be prioritising proposals that seek to engage with new and diverse audiences and that can amplify regional cultural opportunities. All of our projects must be open and accessible. In order to reach the widest possible audience through our supported projects, we are committed to the BFI Diversity Standards.

The standards can be broken down broadly into the following four areas:
● Industry access or training (ensuring that we offer accessible opportunities through our projects and organisations).
● On screen (diverse narratives, cast and places depicted).
● Catering for audiences (provision of disability access, specialist projects for target audiences, providing for specific UK regions etc).
● A diverse crew (exploring who makes the films we screen and offers project leadership).

The total amount attributed to this scheme is: £10,000 for proposals to deliver activity from June 1st – March 31st 2019. We will review each budget submitted individually, but broadly, we can support screening costs, marketing & promotion project coordination and curation. we are anticipating making awards up to £1,500. To download guidelines and to apply, visit the site.
