Apply for a Film Hub Midlands Bursary

The bursary scheme is designed to enable staff and volunteers of member organisations to enhance their professional development for the benefit of themselves, their organisation and the wider Hub network, with the ultimate aim of broadening audiences and boosting audience choice.

Creative Growth Finance Loans for Creative Businesses

Creative England understands the needs of SMEs, particularly those in the creative sector. We know how difficult it is to access finance from traditional sources and that in order to take your business to the next stage, you need a cash injection to make your growth plans a reality.

Creative Growth Finance Debt Fund

The Creative Growth Finance Debt Fund, in partnership with Triodos Bank UK is a £24million fund to provide vital scale up finance to the UK’s most promising creative businesses. The fund will target post revenue, IP rich SMEs, that have reached a point of scale that requires supporting finance. Finance will be directed to post-revenue creative businesses presenting promising growth potential who harness creativity in technologies, are talent led and bring change, disruption and new IP to the creative industries.

The Offer

– Loans of between £100,000 – £500,000*
– Repayment terms of between 1 – 4 years
– Flexible repayment schedules; repayments monthly, quarterly or annually
– A fixed interest rate of between 7.5% – 15% depending on the risk profile
– A 5% management fee charged on payment of the loan

Eligibility

To be considered for a Creative Growth Finance Loan your company must:
– be registered in the United Kingdom
– have been trading for at least two years
– have identifiable revenues and customers
– operate within the creative industries
– have minimum annual revenues of £300,000
– have at least two years of accounts filed at Companies House

New Perspectives Documentary Film Funding – Oct 31st Deadline

Doc Society’s New Perspectives seed fund is an international film fund supporting the development of documentary features. It focuses on issues of social justice, driven by filmmakers who exhibit a unique perspective granted by their connection to the community or issue at hand.

Doc Society recognizes we are at a time where perspective is key to capture the truth of a story. It aims to support documentary film that ignites passion and creates real impact in audiences. They also recognize it’s incredibly difficult to get started. Doc Society is excited to launch the New Perspectives Seed Fund. This will support the development of non-fiction projects by filmmakers around the world.

They are particularly looking for filmmakers who offer a rare insight of the often underrepresented and overlooked. We’re looking for those stories that break barriers and explore nuance over polarity.

By global they mean global – from London to Dallas, Charleston to Taipei, Missoula to Nairobi. They want to hear from you and support your story no matter where you are from.

Funding and Mentorship

The fund will be providing more consistent, deeper support for filmmakers. From developing their creative approach, to casting characters, to advising on additional funding opportunities – they will be mentoring filmmakers on both the development and the progress of their project. In addition to supporting established filmmakers they will be empowering the next generation of non-fiction storytellers to be brave and curious in pursuing the stories they seek to tell.

This fund supports diversity across gender, sexuality, race, regions, mixed-abilities and class. Talent from non-filmmaking communities are encouraged to apply. This is an open call for filmmakers across the globe – whether you’re in a major city or a small town. Documentary pioneers simply need to be eager to share their perspective of the world around them.

This is strictly a development fund. Grants are non recoupable from $5,000 to $20,000 with all rights retained by the filmmaker.

Who Can Apply

Directors from anywhere around the world, of any level of experience can apply. They should be working on films around issues of social justice and equity, be in the early shooting phase, or editing selects. Doc Society’s New Perspectives seed fund does not fund Art Films, Biographies, Films in mid-production, Profiles, News, Current Affairs, Fiction.

New Shoots Film Funding – Deadline October 31st

New Shoots is Shooting People’s film competition which aims to support filmmakers wanting to take the next step in their career. Win £1,000 in film funding, industry mentorship, filmmaking equipment, prizes and a public screening of your short in London. Shooting People members can submit to any round. Entry is free. Not a member? Join the community now at 50% off (offer ends 31 October).

There will be four rounds to the competition in 2019 with entries open in January, April, July and October. Each round winner gets mentorship and prizes. An overall winner will be announced at our awards ceremony in December and will receive an additional £1,000 of funding to go towards their next film production.

Apply to New Shoots:

  • Submission periods for each round open through January 1st – 31st; April 1st – 30th; July 1st – 31st; October 1st – 31st
  • One month after submissions close, three shortlisted films will be announced
  • Then, these three films will be sent to a filmmaking patron who will select the winning film
  • Each round winner will be screened at a New Shoots live event
  • The overall winner will be announced at our awards ceremony at the end of the year

About Film Hub Midlands

Our vision is to inspire a new generation by presenting film and film culture in new ways which make it an essential and compelling part of learning, understanding, and valuing ourselves and the communities in which we live. The Show Fund is our largest open fund, and is for film exhibition projects that support our priorities. It is open to all film exhibitors, from full time cinemas, film festivals, and community groups.

If you are in the business of showing films, and would like support to expand your programme and audience, or have an ambitious project you would like to get off the ground – please submit an Expression of Interest.

In particular reflecting our priorities, we are especially keen to work with organisations who want to reach young audiences, and or those from BAMER communities, those who identify as LGBTQ+, those with access needs, or who are from disadvantaged backgrounds.
We’re also keen to invest in Lincolnshire and Staffordshire, and would welcome projects to reach audiences in those areas.

Funding Priorities

Our priorities for the Film Audience Network under BFI2022 are as follows:

  • Engaging audiences – maximising the number of audiences engaging with FAN activity and increasing the quality and cultural depth of their experience
  • Broadening film choice – increasing access to a wide range of independent British and international film for audiences – especially those outside London
  • Diversity – increasing the diversity of audiences engaging with FAN activity
  • Young audiences – boosting participation of 16-30 year olds in FAN activity
  • Screen heritage – facilitating greater access to archive content with a particular focus on national and regional collections

If you are in the business of showing films, and would like support to expand your programme and audience, or have an ambitious project you would like to get off the ground – please submit an Expression of Interest.

Available Funds

As a guide we anticipate making awards between £2,500 and £15,000, but please refer to the guide below to see where your project fits in terms of scale. We want our projects to reach as many people as possible, and we always consider the value we provide per screening and audience member. As a guide we suggest the following awards would aim to reach the accompanying number of audiences. This is a guide and we do anticipate flexibility.

Amount Awarded: £5,00, Anticipated Admissions: 1,100

Amount Awarded: £75,00, Anticipated Admissions: 1,750

Amount Awarded: £10,000, Anticipated Admissions: 2,500

Supported Projects

We will review each project submitted individually, but broadly, we can support the following:

  • Screening Costs
  • Archive Access Costs
  • Marketing & Promotion
  • Project Coordination
  • Curation Costs

Our Show Fund funding is primarily for audience development therefore we are unable to support film production, distribution, publications, showcases, or talent development activity. Unless you can demonstrably prove why your event cannot happen otherwise, we will not support events that are exclusively free to audiences.

BFI Diversity Standards

All of our projects must be open and accessible. In order to reach the widest possible audience through our supported projects, we are committed to the BFI Diversity Standards. The standards can be broken down broadly into the following four areas:

  • Industry access or training (ensuring that we offer accessible opportunities through our projects and organisations).
  • On screen (diverse narratives, cast and places depicted).
  • Catering for audiences (provision of disability access, specialist projects for target audiences, providing for specific UK regions etc).
  • A diverse crew (exploring who makes the films we screen and offers project leadership).

Submit Your Expression of Interest

We’ve provided an Expression of Interest form for everyone to use. Hopefully you’ll find this makes the process straightforward, letting you tell us the information we need in the shortest time possible. Our aim is to offer a welcoming, transparent, and engaging Hub; so we’d like to emphasise that an Expression of Interest is not an application, but the start of a conversation on how we might collaborate. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like some guidance on the templates.

We do ask you also complete an indicative budget template for your project, with the understanding that it will have flexibility as the project progresses. 

We recommend that you always contact us ahead of submitting an EOI, so we can talk you through the process, and help you determine which fund is best for you. You must be a member of Film Hub Midlands to receive our support, joining is free and quick to do: filmhubmidlands.org/join. If we’re unable to support you this time round, then we’ll offer feedback and advice to help you move forward.

How we assess your project

All projects are reviewed by an assessment panel that includes Film Hub Midlands and our advisory board. We’ll look at your proposal to make a decision about whether we can support it. As part of this we will consider:

  • How well the project meets our objectives;
  • The creative quality of the idea, partnerships and team behind it;
  • Whether it will reach the priority audiences for BFI FAN
  • Value for money including subsidy-per-head
  • Potential legacy and long term impact

Successful Projects

If we like your project, we’ll be in touch and work with you to firm up your project and its budget. Once we are all happy with the plan, we will send an agreement to confirm the terms of your award, and the project you will deliver. As this award will be coming from National Lottery Funds we want to be clear about what will be expecting from you. When you receive your agreement it will contain points on branding and evaluation and reporting.

BFI Short Form Animation Fund – Deadline 5th November

BFI has announced their new Short Form Animation Fund, offering support for higher-budget animated work from teams based in the UK.

About the Short Form Animation Fund

The BFI Short Form Animation Fund offers support for higher-budget animated work from teams based in the UK. The fund is intended for work that is unlikely to be fully commercially financed and would therefore benefit from National Lottery support.

The fund aims to give UK animators who have gained industry attention for their work the chance to work at a higher budget level. It will provide funding of £30,000 – £120,000 per project, supporting teams to create work that can gain major recognition and open up new opportunities. The fund can support narrative short form projects in any animated technique or genre (including documentary) and for any platform, eg cinema, online or TV (though not work intended primarily for broadcast television).

Who is Eligible?

Filmmaking teams from across the UK, who can demonstrate relevant experience in writing, directing and producing, are eligible for the BFI Short Form Animation fund. The director, or writer-director, needs to have made at least three previous pieces of animated work, one of which should have received notable industry recognition. Please check the eligibility criteria outlined in our guidelines carefully before beginning an application to the fund.

Filmmakers with less experience, those at the start of their careers, and writers and directors without a producer, should visit the BFI NETWORK, which supports new filmmakers with networking, professional development opportunities and funding.

To Apply

There is one call for applications per year, and applications for projects for Directors and Writer-Director teams are open. Please ensure you have read the full funding guidelines before you complete the application form.

Make a Film Fund application here before 5th November. If you are a new applicant to the Film Fund, you will need to create an account before completing the application.

On 14th January, BFI will inform applicants if they are invited to an interview, or if they have been unsuccessful. Interviews will take place between 27th and 31st January. Please note that decision and interview dates are subject to revision, depending on the level of applications received.

What is TalentLab ?

B3’s TalentLab is a bespoke talent development programme for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) creatives working in film and across multiple platforms (digital storytelling (VR/ AR) , photography, theatre, spoken word and music). TalentLab aims to reach writers, directors, creative producers, artists, digital artists and media creators, helping them to re-assess their professional practice, improve their skills, and give them the confidence and contacts to push their careers and projects to the next level.

We want to take you and your project to the next level and beyond.

Who are we looking for ?

Be part of our cohort group this year if your project is digital art, cross-platform film: shorts to features (fiction and documentary) . Take part in a series of intense development labs this November. Up to 12 projects will be selected for further development and 6 will be given a development commission of up to £1000. You will also get an opportunity to present your project to funders at our B3 Futures industry showcase in November 2019.

Project ideas

• Apply with a short or long form film or cross platform project or a multimedia project which includes moving image as a key component.
• Submit a project appropriate to your level of experience. For example, if you’re submitting a feature idea to us, we need to see a short or evidence of commissioned
work in other areas (e.g. tv, theatre, digital media) that shows that you have fresh, original and unexpected ideas and narratives.
• Non-genre, genre and cross-genre films – drama/comedy/horror/thriller/sci-fi, etc. – are welcome.

How do I apply ?

• You can apply as a writer, director, writer/director, artist, creative producer, or digital artist.

Get Funding from BFI Doc Society’s Short Film Fund – Deadline July 9th

Made of Truth: BFI Doc Society Short Film Fund is now open! In our second year, we invite passionate filmmakers to take the temperature of our world and create electrifying films for the UK and beyond. As part of BFI Network, the Fund supports all forms of docs – personal stories, hybrids, artist films, essays, observational and social issue projects. This is an urgent opportunity to tell stormy stories which reflect our turbulent times.

Made of Truth: BFI Doc Society Fund is committed to building a diverse community of filmmakers and working with people from underserved backgrounds including BAME, LGBTQ+, mixed ability and non-filmmaking talent. We’re reaching out to new storytellers from around the country and all communities and are especially keen to increase the number of projects originated outside London.

Projects will receive creative and mentorship support from the BFI Doc Society team, and relevant industry partners. Filmmakers do not need to have a producer or production company to apply. We can facilitate partnerships with producers.

 

Requirements

BFI Doc Society and can fund ten short films with budget contributions of up to £15,000 and are happy to look at ideas of any length up to 40 minutes. Once selected, films will need to be delivered by the end of January 2020. Documentary filmmakers and those with related experience over the age of 18 are welcome to apply.

All films have to pass the cultural test in order to be eligible. Download Guidelines here.

ScreenSkills Offering £500,000 Bursaries for Screen Industry Professionals

ScreenSkills has committed more than £500,000 in 2019/20 to bursaries for individual screen professionals for training and career opportunities. New entrants to the screen industries will now be eligible for some strands of financial support for the first time. Previous rules meant that applicants needed a minimum of two professional credits.

The application process has also been simplified, with a single point of entry covering all the different funds available. New rules mean that applications will be considered for the first time for items such as driving lessons, software licensing or wet weather equipment because not being able to afford these items has been identified as a barrier to progressing in the screen industries.

Support will continue to be offered for childcare, accommodation and travel in a move to open up opportunities to people wanting to return to the industry after a parenting break and for those who need initial help in taking up opportunities to advance their career.

The funding, which is increased from previous years, is supported by the BFI awarding national lottery funds as well as industry contributions from the High-end, Children’s TV and Television Skills Funds.

This bursary will be open for applications until March 31st, 2020.

Priority will be given to applications from people who are working in skills gap or shortage areas in the industry. Other factors which may be taken into account in awarding funds include income and whether the proposed course is one recognised by ScreenSkills. WFTV Pat Llewellyn Bursary Fund – Deadline 30th September

The 2019 WFTV Pat Llewellyn Bursary Fund, in memory of award-winning producer Pat Llewellyn, is now open for applications. The 2019 Fund will award four successful applicants £10,000 each to develop their factual entertainment or factual TV project, match them with an industry mentor to support them along the way, and offer the chance to meet with key decision-makers who have the potential to ‘greenlight’ their idea. The Fund is a joint collaboration between WFTV, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, All3Media and The Welsh Government.

Who Should Apply

Applications are open to any woman with a unique project and a passion for TV. You don’t need to have academic qualifications or industry contacts, just an exciting idea that would be suitable for commission by a UK TV broadcaster. Your project could be a one-off documentary or a factual series or format. It cannot be a drama project. Once you have honed your idea, the online application form to submit it is simple and quick to complete.

To celebrate Pat Llewellyn’s Welsh roots, and to encourage other women from Wales to follow in her creative footsteps, two places this year will be held specifically for any woman either born in or living in Wales, or with a Welsh parent. The other winner can come from anywhere in the UK.

It is free to apply, but you may only submit ONE application with ONE idea. If you submit more than one application, or more than one idea in a single application, ONLY your first submission/idea will be considered.

More about Pat Llewellyn and the Bursary Fund

Pat Llewellyn was a multi-award winning producer and renowned for discovering and developing new talent. During her career, she created BBC2’s Two Fat Ladies, discovered Jamie Oliver and christened him The Naked Chef, made Gordon Ramsay famous with Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, and launched the career of Mary Portas with Mary Queen of Shops.

Pat ran Optomen, a production company with offices in London, New York and LA, which under her leadership grew from a turnover of £5m to £55m. She died of metastatic breast cancer in October 2017, and the Bursary Fund was created to remember her and honour the huge contribution she made to TV programming worldwide.

The Bursary is funded by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, the Welsh Government and AllThreeMedia and managed by WFTV. The inaugural recipients in 2018 were Megan Jenkins, Victoria Mapplebeck and Cheryl Richardson.
