Against this backdrop, it tells the story of a group of young people fighting to choose their own path in life, each in need of the second chance that music offers. It was filmed on location in the Birmingham area, and at Steven Knight’s new Digbeth Loc. Film and TV Studios.

The commission of This Town underlines the BBC’s commitment to make more content across the UK, helping to ensure that the BBC’s portrayal of the Midlands is more authentic, more real, and more ambitious than ever before.

It showcases the wide range creative talent that the whole of the Midlands has to offer, and the BBC is proud to be a part of it.”

Steven Knight, Creator, Writer and Executive Producer of This Town said: “I can’t wait for people to see this exciting new show. But, first, I’d love the people of Birmingham and Coventry to see it because it’s about us.”

Karen Wilson, Joint MD of Kudos said: “We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with Steven Knight, with a show that is steeped in the spirit of the Midlands and the thrilling music scene of the era. We think Steve has created another cast of unforgettable, iconic characters and can’t wait for audiences to meet them”.

Martin Haines, Joint MD of Kudos said: “Our mission in setting set up the Kudos Knight partnership is to invest in brilliant West Midlands talent and to create a drama pipeline which is made in Birmingham and attracts the brightest and the best. We are delighted that our first project to come to the screen is This Town which is emblematic of everything we want to achieve. This is just the start…”

Marc Robinson, Co-President of Mercury Studios said: “It has been a privilege to be working with Paul Whittington, Steven Knight and the entire Kudos team in bringing the musical narrative of This Town to life. Music is at the heart of the series, and it has been a thrill to work with such excellent musical talent on this project. Having Dan Carey and Kae Tempest involved from script stage, set the tone that went on to attract the array of talent that ensued whilst in edit. Excited to share and celebrate the music that compliments this exceptional series.”

NFTS Prime Video Craft Academy 2024

By Training No Comments

NFTS Prime Video Craft Academy 2024

The Prime Video Craft Academy delivered by the National Film and Television School has places for 25 people based in London, Cardiff and Glasgow on paid traineeships and apprenticeships working on a UK-produced Amazon Original Series or with the trusted Prime Video and Amazon Studios supply partners.

The Prime Video Craft Academy will be offering traineeships for those interested in broad foundation training and craft roles. And in addition, there will be an opportunity for those who prefer to take the apprenticeship route to apply for an apprenticeship at this point.

For the first time NFTS are piloting a flexi-apprenticeship and will be offering the opportunity to apply for a Level 4 Media Production Co-ordinator. At this stage the apprenticeship opportunity is only available in NFTS’ Beaconsfield (London) hub. In Production Management, the traineeship will be offered as an apprenticeship qualification. All other disciplines will be traineeships.

If temporary relocation is necessary, NFTS will consider requests for bursaries to support trainees/apprentices as needed. They also offer bursaries to support trainees/apprentices with driving lessons.

The 25 Academy participants will:

  • Be given a 12-month contract with the NFTS
  • Work on some of the biggest TV productions, both scripted and unscripted, currently being made in the UK for Prime Video or by trusted partners
  • Learn a specialism – NFTS are particularly keen to hear from people who are interested in Production Management, as they will be offering apprenticeships in this area.
  • Access training and support from the NFTS, which is widely regarded to be one of the top film schools in the world.
  • Be awarded an NFTS Certificate in Production or a Media Production Co-ordinator apprenticeship on successful completion of the programme.
  • Be employed by the NFTS on a 12-month fixed-term contract and earn £33,800. The employment for apprenticeships will likely last 15 months.

As the year progresses, participants will gain experience in areas such as Production Management, Assistant Directing, Art Department, Locations, Camera, Sound, Post Production, IT, Sustainability, Transport, Lighting, Grip and Costume.

Upon completion of the programme, the NFTS and Prime Video will work with the individual participants to plan and support their next steps hopefully into full-time work within the screen industries. Although no further work or placements are guaranteed at this stage.

The apprenticeship training culminates in the undertaking of a production project on a UK-produced Amazon Original Series, with trusted Prime Video and Amazon Studios supply partners, or on a Masters student project at the NFTS. The project forms the basis for the end point assessment which completes the apprenticeship. Apprentices will evidence their work and their learning in an online portfolio on an ongoing basis, and their progress will be supported regularly by mentors from the NFTS while they are on placement.

Entry requirements

  • NFTS welcome candidates who are committed to and passionate about a career in film and television. They would be excited to learn about all the different aspects of both scripted and unscripted film and television and be open to placements in different departments. They would have a brilliant ‘can-do’ attitude, work effectively on their own and or collaboratively in group settings to achieve goals. Candidates must have a drive and determination to complete required tasks of the role. Candidates should be able to highlight how they maintain their knowledge and understanding of latest trends, high rating shows and consumer engagement (this may be via social media, campaigns etc).
  • Candidates must have no more than a combined total of one year’s paid experience working on a professional television or film production in any role or department in the last 5 years. Candidates must also have no more than 6 months paid experience in their chosen department in the last 5 years. This scheme is not for you if you already have a lot of experience in your chosen department or if you’re looking to become a director/screenwriter/researcher.
  • Please note that NFTS are unable to sponsor candidates for these roles, so NFTS are only able to accept applications from candidates who are able to demonstrate their right to live and work in the UK.  If you do not have the right to work in the UK, NFTS will not be able to progress your application.
  • At the NFTS, people are at the heart of what they do. They’re an inclusive employer and are committed to equality of opportunity, and building a culturally diverse workforce. NFTS are committed to being an anti-racist organisation and to increasing their representation of staff from ethnically diverse backgrounds. NFTS strongly encourage applications from all backgrounds.

Selection process

Stage 1

The National Film and Television School will read all eligible applications and decide on a shortlist.

NFTS will be looking for applicants who show a level of commitment, passion and skills from past experiences. Please give details of interests or other activities you have done that would be an asset in the film and TV industry. Transferable skills are important, as is any extra curricula work – eg work with charities, on social media and independent content producing.

Before being approved for attendance at the selection workshop, applicants will be asked to provide evidence of their right to work in the UK.

Stage 2

Up to 50 applicants for the trainee and apprenticeship roles will be shortlisted to attend a selection workshop which will take place in person over the three days of 8th – 10th November hosted at The National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield. Please don’t apply for the traineeship/apprenticeship if you are not available on these dates. You will be notified by 10th October if you have progressed to this stage. Bursaries are available to help those in need of financial support to meet the out-of-pocket travel and accommodation expenses of attending the workshop.

The selection workshop will involve learning about the film and TV industry and participating in practical workshops. Plus an interview.

After the selection workshop the NFTS will write to all candidates to advise them of the outcome by the end of November.

Traineeship contracts will start on 1st January 2024 and will run until 31st December 2024. Apprenticeship contracts will start on 1st January 2024 and will run until approximately 31st March 2025.

How to apply

You will need to submit one combined PDF including:

Please be clear which of the Beaconsfield, Cardiff or Glasgow hubs would be your preferred home base and which craft(s) in particular you are interested in learning.
  • Please also tell NFTS in no more than 500 words what you’re currently watching and enjoying – and why – and your all-time TV favourite programmes and films.
  • Please also let NFTS know if you need them to make any reasonable adjustments while you are applying or taking up the traineeship/apprenticeship, so NFTS can make this process and traineeship/apprenticeship as inclusive as possible.
  • A completed written reference from someone who knows your work and your commitment to working in film and television (it may be a tutor, teacher, current boss, voluntary organisation etc who can evidence your passion for TV).

These documents should be saved as one PDF named ‘Your Full Name – Prime Video Craft Academy Application’ and sent to primeacademy@nfts.co.uk

TripleC DANC is partnering with Channel 4 to deliver RISE2, a year-long mentoring initiative to support and elevate the next generation of senior off-screen deaf, disabled and / or neurodivergent talent in TV.

There are 6 places and the scheme will take place in 2024. They will take a step-by-step approach to building the programme around the needs identified by the selected mentees.

They must be mid to senior level – ie, have been working in TV for at least three years and progressed already in their career. The overarching aim is for RISE2 mentees to be in a stronger position to move to the next stage of their career once they have taken part.

This is not a scheme for entry into the TV industry. For entry level/early career opportunities via Channel 4 please go to the 4Skills website. Participants must be UK based.

What’s involved?

How to apply

To be considered for this programme, please apply by answering the application questions, either via the online form below or via email to:  applications.tripleC@gmail.com with RISE2 in the heading

They are happy to receive applications in any format – whatever is most accessible for you – eg, through the online form, written in an email or Word document, via a video in BSL or English, or in an audio file. Please make sure that you cover all the questions set out below, including the equal opportunities questions and your agreement for your application to be shared with Channel 4. Film and TV Charity rolls out extra £0.5million to help UK film, TV, and cinema workers

By Uncategorized No Comments

Film and TV Charity rolls out unprecedented extra £0.5million to help UK film, TV, and cinema workers in urgent financial need as industry faces critical economic conditions that could devastate the livelihood of professionals, with long term consequences for the industry as a whole.

The Film and TV Charity has confirmed it is adding an additional £500,000 to its existing budget in response to the increase it has seen in applications for support with urgent financial need. Following a briefing call with representatives from its corporate partners, BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, Prime Video, ITV, Hartswood Films, and Banijay have also pledged further donations to bolster the Charity’s budget, adding to donations from other organisations and individuals that have been made during the Charity’s summer campaign. Other partners are expected to add to the overall pot as the challenging period looks set to continue.

The Charity, which supports the mental health and the financial and social wellbeing of people working in behind-the-scenes roles in film, television, and cinema, made the announcement ahead of its incoming CEO, Marcus Ryder MBE, speaking to delegates at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

The move follows an 800% rise in applications for stop-gap grants in July 2023 compared to the same month in 2022 and is also in response to emerging evidence that workers across the industry are exposed to financial insecurity that can negatively impact their mental health, with a wide range of current and more systemic contributing factors causing a perfect storm for many.

The Charity’s recent survey looking at the financial resilience of industry workers shows that 46% of respondents had zero or less than £1,000 in savings and half aren’t contributing to a pension. People from marginalised groups were more likely to be affected, with carers, Black and Global Majority, and Disabled workers often finding it even harder to navigate current financial pressures with higher levels of debt and lower household incomes. Insights from the survey will be presented and examined during the Charity’s Edinburgh session, entitled Production under pressure: Supporting life on the frontline, featuring Ryder; financial wellbeing and inclusion consultant and Film and TV Charity Trustee, Kirsty Good; and Dean Webster, Head of Development at Ten66.

The Film and TV Charity encourages anyone who is dealing with financial worries, debt or who is experiencing mental health concerns to contact its free, 24/7 Film and TV Support Line by calling 0800 054 0000 or by visiting www.filmtvcharity.org.uk. There they can access tools and advice to support their financial wellbeing, as well as check their eligibility and apply for urgent financial support.

Film Hub Midlands Film Exhibition Fund Round Two 2023

Film Hub Midlands Film Exhibition Fund Round Two 2023

The second round of the Film Exhibition Fund is set to continue to reboot the independent film exhibition sector and aid the cultural organisations across the Midlands. It supports exhibitors to continue audience development activity in line with FAN objectives, programme British, independent and international film, and deliver screenings.

The fund supports activity taking place from October 2023 – 31 March 2024. Support of up to £10,000 is available, and the fund is open to the entire range of members of Film Hub Midlands. Support can cover programming, marketing, audience development, and associated screening costs. Whilst projects can range from seasons, festivals, one-offs and special events, to continuous support for independent cinema programmes.

Whilst audiences are at the heart of everything FAN does, the sector’s ability to reach those audiences in a collective setting is entirely dependent on the sustainability of the cinemas, festivals, community venues, and other organisations that make up the Film Audience Network. Online activity will only therefore be considered for support when accompanied by in-person screenings.

How to apply

Complete the Film Exhibition Fund proposal form here. Deadline is Friday 1st September 2023.

If you require assistance to complete this form, the BFI provides access support, find out more here. The Film Hub team are available for one-to-one general support and advice with your application.
