Film Hub Midlands Creative Producer Lab 2024

Can you make things happen? Do you know your way around a film production? Can you spot talent and develop stories? You just might be a Producer

Creative Producer Lab is back for 2024 to help develop a new wave of emerging producers in the North and Midlands. Going into its 6 year the programme has seen alumni produce features, Associate Produce on major productions, be funded by BFI, Film 4 and BBC and receive funding from business development schemes. The Creative Producers Lab has proven to be a first step toward a career in producing.

Running from mid-September, through October and culminating at Aesthetica in November, the Lab takes 8 early-career filmmakers from the North, and 8 from the Midlands, through a 6-week training programme. Sessions take place online once per week and cover topics such as producing fundamentals, building a slate, budgeting and scheduling, pre-production, shooting, post-production, casting and distribution delivered by the Film Hubs and industry professionals.

The programme ends at Aesthetica where you’ll connect with writers from script lab programmes and filmmakers from across the region to help build your pool of collaborators and slate. Participants will leave the programme with a foundation in all aspects of managing a production, an expanded network of peers, and the skills they need to make an impact in the industry.

Applications close at 5pm Friday 16 August. Read on for more information about the programme and how to apply.

Who’s it for?

They’re looking for anyone with an interest in film producing.

The ideal Creative Producer Lab candidate will have good communication skills, a commitment to storytelling and the ability to work collaboratively.

Applicants might be working in grassroots filmmaking and looking to take the next step in their career. You may be transitioning from working in the commercial or corporate sector. Or you may have relevant experience in another artform, or be working as a production coordinator or assistant in production.

This isn’t exhaustive, though – if you’re interested in producing, they’d welcome an application.

Creative Producer Lab is not a programme for people who are primarily interested in writing and/or directing. Although they’re open to people moving over from those roles, they’re looking for people who have a genuine desire to be a Producer.

To be eligible for the Creative Producer Lab you must:

  • Have an interest in producing the work of others
  • Be over 18 and not in full time education
  • Have a passion for cinema and an idea about what stories you want to tell

Delivered by Trans+ On Screen, through the BFI Creative Challenge Fund, made possible with National Lottery funding. A new lab designed for Trans+ and/or Queer Global Majority writers to develop their feature film genre projects.

Trans+ On Screen are creating a space that’s unique and intimate with the needs of writers at the forefront whilst focusing on supporting ambitious projects.

They are looking for up to 10 writers with film ideas that expand the parameters of the kinds of stories Trans+ and Queer creatives have been able to tell and want to develop quality work that has the ability to travel and find audiences globally.

Following a pitching weekender that drills into the art of pitching yourself and your project, the programme will culminate in a pitch showcase at BFI Flare. This will be an opportunity to bring together funders, studios, streamers, agents, sales agents, producers, directors and showcase our writers and their projects to wider industry and connect them with the tangible next steps to getting their project made.

What you will get out if it

  • A six day residency that will be designed to develop each project in a lab environment, incorporating peer to peer feedback
  • A programme of masterclasses throughout the 6 month programme that will hear from industry experts on the topic of writing and developing your career as well as case studies from filmmakers
  • three day pitching weekender that will be designed to develop your project’s pitch
  • pitching showcase at BFI Flare to platform your project to the wider industry
  • Networking opportunities and the chance to build a solid connection with your fellow cohort of writers

WFTV FEARLESS Leadership Programme 2024

By Training No Comments

WFTV FEARLESS Leadership Programme 2024

The purpose of the WFTV Fearless Leadership Programme is to empower women to thrive in senior leadership positions by providing training and coaching in leadership skills, tools and techniques and mindset.

WFTV believe that if they want to enact change, one of the most powerful ways is to make sure women leaders are represented at the highest levels across the screen industries in all roles and empowered with the leadership skills, self-belief and confidence to set and deliver strategy, to make positive impact and maintain their resilience for the long-haul.

This is a bespoke programme of group coaching, 1-2-1 coaching and masterclasses, and is designed to supercharge leadership skills and create an annual cohort of 12 female leaders who will be professional sounding boards and confidants for each other for the rest of their careers.

Who is it for?

You are eligible to apply for this scheme if you have 15 years’ experience plus and are in a leadership position in the film, TV & screen industries.

WFTV is committed to equal opportunities and developing diversity and inclusivity across the industry, so it puts key targets in place to ensure the programme is both diverse and inclusive.

The programme will cover topics such as persuading and influencing, landing key messages, motivating and empowering teams and setting work culture as well as profile-raising and thought leadership.

This programme is a great opportunity for those who are:

  • Finding leadership is lonely – often leaders have no-one to share experiences with and as a result, stress, worry, self-doubt and lack of courageous leadership kick in.
  • Finding the constant changes in the industry hard to navigate in terms of setting strategy and managing a team. We are living in a brittle, anxious, non-linear and incomprehensible (BANI) world so the old-style command and control leadership doesn’t work well. Modern leaders must be more agile, inclusive, adaptive and resilient to change.
  • Feeling the effects of social conditioning about how a woman leader should behave (e.g., not wanting to be too pushy, too aggressive, too over-bearing) and want the confidence to push back or know how to frame responses.
  • Finding it hard to maintaining resilience and mental / physical health for the long haul.
  • In a leadership role but want to improve your leadership skills and effectiveness.

WFTV would love to hear from you if you are:

  • A woman currently working in a leadership role within linear or multi-platform film, television or digital content creation. For example: Head of Department, a Founder or in a senior role running an indie, a C-suite role or board-member role
  • Have more than 15 years’ experience in the industry
  • Can commit to 6 group days and individual coaching  (over a six month period).

What is involved?

  • 6 X 1 day Leadership Group Coaching with the cohort
  • An individual 360 Leadership Circle Profile to evaluate your current leadership skills and development areas
  • 3 x Individual Leadership Coaching sessions with course leader Tracy Forsyth
  • A professional profile headshot with photographer Gemma Day
  • WFTV speaking opportunities – presenting a panel or giving a webinar.

This scheme requires you to be committed and proactive; you will be selected on what you can bring to the group as well as what you might gain from the course:

  • Every leader is required to give a one-hour webinar or panel on a subject of their choice to the WFTV membership.
  • You must be able to commit to the group coaching days.
  • You must be willing to pay it forward through mentoring in the future

How to apply

If you are considering applying to take part in the Fearless Leadership programme and want to find out more, watch the informational session with Senior Leadership Coach, Tracy Forsyth, where she explained what the programme covers and the crucial information you will need to include in your application, as well as answering questions.

Please complete the application form by Monday 1 July, 17:00. If you’d like to look at the questions before completing the application form, you can view them here.

At WFTV they’re keen to ensure that all their programmes are accessible for everyone. If you have any access requirements, please let them know within the application and they will happily accommodate you. Please contact admin@wftv.org.uk if you’d like to discuss in more detail.

BFI National Lottery short form animation funding

By Funding No Comments

BFI National Lottery short form animation funding

The BFI National Lottery Short Form Animation Fund provides support for higher-budget animated short films, made by UK-based teams. The Fund supports narrative short form projects in any animated technique or genre, which are unlikely to be fully commercially financed and would therefore benefit from National Lottery support.

This Fund aims to give UK animators who have gained industry attention for their work the chance to create a project at a higher budget level. It supports short form animated work as an artform in itself, as well as a potential springboard for filmmakers to move on to longer form work. Films supported by previous rounds of the Fund have found success at film festivals, award ceremonies and through online distribution. They have allowed filmmakers to practice new approaches and animation techniques. BFI are looking for projects that will enable their teams to advance their creative practice, take risks and rise to a new level of ambition.

Eligible applicants can seek production funding of between £30,000 to £120,000. BFI have limited funds and hope to receive applications at a range of budget levels and requests. BFI don’t expect to provide many awards at the maximum level of £120,000 per project and may offer applicants a lower amount than the one initially requested.

How to apply

You need to read the funding guidelines in full, before you apply. You can apply via the link here or read the Immersive Projects Application Preview here.

To apply, you’ll need to create an account, or have an existing account on the BFI’s grant website. You’ll then need to complete and submit the online application form. You can save your application and return to it when you need to but it must be submitted on or before the closing date on Tuesday 9 July at 5pm.

The BFI can provide assistance to applicants who have access requirements and need some support in order to make an application.

If you have any questions relating to this funding or your application, email productioncoordinator@bfi.org.uk.

Phoebe Frances Brown Film Fund 2024

By Funding No Comments

PHOEBE FRANCES BROWN

Phoebe Frances Brown was a hugely talented writer and performer who lost her battle with brain cancer in April 2022 aged just 29. She brought immense wit and warmth to all her work on stage and screen and was a founder member of the all-female comedy collective Major Labia.

THE FUND 2024

The Phoebe Frances Brown Film Fund is a £1000 grant that Mister Tibbs will award to a female filmmaker with a comedy idea they want to produce.

So if you’re a writer, director, producer, performer, animator, or some combination of those disciplines, if you identify as female, and if you make comedy, then we want to hear from you.

To apply there are two things we need from you. A written statement and an example of your work.

YOUR STATEMENT should be 500 words tops (or you can record a 3 minute video/audio clip if you find that easier). Your statement should give us a sense of your filmmaking experience to date, what you aim to achieve in your career and how this grant might help move you towards those goals. Tell us a bit about the project you want to make and how £1000 would help you produce it.

YOUR WORK SAMPLE can be anything: an unmade script, a previous sketch, a short film or a live show excerpt. Show us something that you’ve created which gives us a sense of your voice and your tone (and please send links not large attachments wherever possible).

TIMELINE

  • The deadline for applications is Friday May 31st 2024 (please submit before 11:59pm).
  • Mister Tibbs will arrange follow up conversations with shortlisted applicants through July.
  • The winner will be informed on Friday July 26th 2024.
  • Mister Tibbs will screen your work to industry professionals in London and Manchester in January 2025 but we can only do so if you deliver your finished film on or before December 31st 2024.

Please note: this grant is only available to applicants who identify as female. You must be based in the UK and aged 18 or over to apply.

Please also note: Hampstead Theatre and Nottingham Playhouse run a very similar scheme for new playwrights called “The Phoebe Frances Brown Award”. So if you write for stage you might be better served by their scheme than by ours, which is strictly for screen.

You can apply to the Phoebe Frances Brown Film Fund by submitting an application form here.
