Reel & Meal: City Of God

November 24, 2023 @ 8:30 pm

As chosen by head chef Karle Morgan, this is a rare cinematic outing for Fernando Mereilles and Kátia Lund’s brutal 2002 feature, preceded by a meal inspired by Brazilian cuisine.

City Of God follows two boys growing up in a violent Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood who take very different paths. Rocket, a poor kid too frail and scared to become an outlaw, but also too smart to be content with an underpaid job, becomes a professional photographer. Then there’s Lil Dice, a kid the same age who dreams of being Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous criminal. Before long, he will be.
