SUMMARY:Cinema & Censorship in the 1930s: the work of the Birmingham Cinema Enquiry
DESCRIPTION:David is a semi-retired lecturer in Education Studies with an interest in social history and the history of education. This talk resulted from voluntary research for the Flatpack Festival and “Wonderland”\, a project mapping Birmingham’s cinema stories as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. \nThe Birmingham Cinema Enquiry Committee began in 1930\, born out of concern for what people were viewing in cinemas\, especially children eagerly soaking up pictures at popular Saturday matinees. The Committee gained a name nationally and internationally\, with several conferences held in the City\, and a petition was sent to the Home Secretary in London. Depending upon contemporary points of view\, it was either a genuine attempt to resist the deluge of sensationalist and sordid pictures\, often from the U.S.A.\, or a group of self-appointed interfering busy-bodies and “troglodytes”. \n\nWas there too much censorship or not enough?\nWould some films lead to “Disorder in Digbeth” and “Murder in Moseley”?\nWhat was the impact on children’s mental and physical health?\nWas there too much “thrill-seeking” at the expense of the “brighter side” and “English tradition”?\nTo what extent was the Enquiry a middle class attempt to dictate to the masses?\n\nDavid will invite the audience to consider their own cinema-going experiences and any similarities with other moral panics over the years.

SUMMARY:SAFAR 2023: The Blue Caftan
DESCRIPTION:Hand-stitched with loving care\, this mature\, resonant drama is the latest from Touzani\, writer-director of 2019’s Adam. It’s set in Moroccan town Salé\, where Mina (Azabal) runs a small shop selling traditional caftans created by her husband\, master tailor Halim (Saleh Bakri). Such an artisanal enterprise is bound to struggle in the modern world\, and further complications arise when Halim\, secretly gay\, finds himself attracted to the shop’s new apprentice Youssef (Ayoub Missioui). \nThe Blue Caftan is an emotionally complex\, richly empathetic depiction of a partnership sustained through storms and challenges\, with Azabal and Bakri exuding a warm\, gently crackling chemistry. Superb performances\, sly humour\, Virginie Surdej’s glowing photography and a strong throughline of social defiance make this a profoundly satisfying pleasure. \n\n\n\n\n\nDuration includes trailers and adverts. Please note that we do not admit latecomers after the main feature has started and we have a limited food & drink policy. See more information about Relaxed Screenings here. SUMMARY:SAFAR 2023: Alam
DESCRIPTION: SAFAR Film Festival is the largest festival in the UK dedicated to cinema from the Arab world.\nFrench film Alam is directed by Firas Khoury and is 125 minutes in duration. \n\n\n\nMarked each year by celebrations\, Israel’s Independence Day coincides with the commemoration of Al-Nakba (the Catastrophe) — the day Palestinians memorialize their dispossession and displacement in 1948. For Tamer (Mahmoud Bakri) and his high-school friends\, the social and psychological dissonance of being Palestinian in Israel is a daily struggle that is only heightened in the lead-up to Nakba Day. \nWhen the resolute and beautiful Maysaa’ (Sereen Khass) joins Tamer’s class\, some choices become a little clearer for the strong\, silent 17-year-old. Noticing her whispering with Safwat\, and curious to learn what they have planned\, Tamer makes his move\, acting on an adolescent urge to get closer to his dream girl but unprepared for the exposure that can come from them daring to dream together. \nA fluid and absorbing feature debut from Firas Khoury\, Alam is a coming-of-age drama full of contemporary urgency. \n\n\n\n\n\nDuration includes trailers and adverts. Please note that we do not admit latecomers after the main feature has started and we have a limited food & drink policy. See more information about Relaxed Screenings here. SUMMARY:AI: The new frontier for journalism
DESCRIPTION:This RTS session will consider the innovations and potential challenges AI will have on journalism. On the one hand\, it can assist journalists and stimulate the industry\, on the other it can threaten social cohesion by making deep fakes and online bots more prevalent. \nThis appears to be a vital moment in the next stage of tech’s relationship with the news business and there are wide-ranging calls to ensure that responsible AI models are adopted and created from the outset\, not least as we gear up for worldwide elections. \nIn this session we will hear from organisations that are already using AI technology to work more efficiently and deliver more of what their audiences want\, as well as getting an understanding of what regulators are doing around the world to ensure that this technology contributes positively to the industry. \nThe session will be hosted by Symeon Brown\, Channel 4 News correspondent and host of AI Watch. \nPanel: \nAli-Abbas Ali – Director of Broadcasting Competition\, Ofcom\nTami Hoffman – Director of News Distribution and Commercial Innovation\, ITN\nGary Rogers – Senior Newsroom Strategy Consultant\, Fathm

In 2022\, in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation\, James co-produced and interviewed residents for a documentary of Nubia Way – a black-led self-build project in Downham\, Lewisham built in 1997. James’ interest in Nubia Way began by producing a paper titled ‘Nubia Way: Homebuilding as Black Resistance\,’ after a series of interviews with local residents and key stakeholders. James was published as part of the ‘Now You Know’ publication by Sound Advice\, which challenges discrimination in the built environment.
