SUMMARY:Goodness Gracious Me - From Writing to Screen
DESCRIPTION:DESIblitz Literature Festival 2023\nJoin us for an incredible evening and discover what it took to write the ground-breaking hit BBC comedy ‘Goodness Gracious Me’.\n\n\nWho can believe it’s been 25 years since we were told to ‘Kiss My Chuddies’\, since we were introduced to ‘Surjeetaaaaa\,’ ‘Mr Everything Comes From India’\, and learnt a guaranteed way to end any debate with\, ‘How big is his danda?’ We have never quite looked at an aubergine the same way again! But it takes more than memorable catch phrases to make a hit comedy\, especially one that goes on to become an acknowledged TV classic. Actors Nina Wadia and Kulvinder Ghir\, alongside actor/writer Sanjeev Kohli\, take centre stage this evening. Find out what it was like to be part of this ground-breaking team\, how to develop ideas into plans\, plans into scripts\, then finally see those scripts come to life on screen. \nTickets: £10

SUMMARY:The Old Oak + Q&A with Ken Loach
DESCRIPTION:Rumoured to be the final film of acclaimed British director Ken Loach\, The Old Oak is a moving and powerful drama that shows the ways fear and hope can define and drive a community. In a northern former mining town\, pub landlord TJ keeps the pub The Old Oak running thanks to a handful of loyal regulars. He observes their increasing frustrations at the deprivation in their local community\, and the simmering tension that forms around the arrival of several refugee Syrian families who have been housed in the area. That anger is exacerbated when TJ strikes up an unlikely friendship with Yara\, a young Syrian photographer. \nFollowing I\, Daniel Blake and Sorry We Missed You\, Ken Loach completes his ‘North East Trilogy’ in the same highly emotive register\, fearlessly exploring uncomfortably honest stories with a deep compassion for his and screenwriter Paul Laverty’s characters. Heartbreaking\, but never without hope\, The Old Oak is a striking reminder of why Ken Loach is\, and always will be\, one of the UK’s most important filmmakers. \nThe screening will be followed by a live onstage Q&A with Ken Loach. Hosted by Professor Roger Shannon. \nPrice: From £13.50

SUMMARY:City On Screen - Birmingham Heritage Week Screening
DESCRIPTION:City on Screen is a fascinating documentary that explores the rich cinematic and television history of Birmingham\, and its more recent fall from grace. \nIt is a film that comes at a moment when Birmingham is undergoing a bit of a cultural renaissance thanks to the international hit Peaky Blinders\, but although the city is home to a hit show and a number of new film and television production companies\, it still finds itself lagging behind other cities when it comes to artistic infrastructure. \nFord’s documentary pulls no punches and tries to answer the difficult questions\, including\, why Birmingham is falling behind? And also what can be done to help Birmingham become a major destination for film productions\, festivals\, and other cultural events once again?
