Sophie was a treasured part of our Acting\, Circus & Dance departments\, and performed on stage at The Dream Factory in a number of productions. We will hear from top casting director Shaheen Baig as she shares her experiences and advice\, and you will have the chance to ask your questions! \nShaheen Baig – Casting Director \nWorking across film and television Shaheen has cast award winning work with new and established directors. Film credits include debut features from Anton Corbijn\, William Oldroyd\, Aleem Khan\, Francis Lee\, Sally El Hosani and Billie Piper. Established directors include Sean Durkin\, Peter Strickland\, Clio Barnard and Ben Wheatley. \nMost recent film work includes multi nominated and winning features AFTER LOVE\, MOGUL MOWGLI\, ALI & AVA\, THE SWIMMERS and debut features from Georgia Oakley BLUE JEAN\, Amrou Al-Kadhi’s LAYLA and Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner SCRAPPER\, directed by Charlotte Regan. \nIn television Shaheen has cast all six series of PEAKY BLINDERS and all series of I AM\, the female led anthology series for CH4. As well as award winning dramas THREE GIRLS\, BLACK MIRROR (CH4)\, MAN LIKE MOBEEN\, THE VIRTUES\, SOUTHCLIFFE\, THE THIRD DAY and forthcoming THE GALLOWS POLE directed by Shane Meadows for BBC/Element Pictures. \nShaheen has also just made her debut casting for theatre\, Brokeback Mountain in the West End starring Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges. \nShaheen is a member of BAFTA\, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Casting Directors Guild of Great Britain & Ireland. DESCRIPTION:Create Central is hosting an online briefing to hear more about our upcoming Skills Accelerator programme of activities. \nCome and find out why we were selected as one of six UK BFI Skills Clusters\, and how this work combines with our wider activity most recently announced at the Create Central Shape the Future launch. \nThis briefing is an opportunity for you to hear an overview of our plans around the Skills Accelerator training programmes\, our commitment to engaging talent from underrepresented backgrounds and how we are building on industry partnerships. \nLearn more about how these activities will connect local skills bases\, support talent across the West Midlands\, and create opportunities to engage with Create Central further. We will be holding two online briefings on: \nMonday 26 June at 3pm & Wednesday 28 June at 1pm \nThe briefings will be approximately 60mins and are the same\, so you only need to register for one. There will be a presentation as part of these online briefings and an opportunity to ask questions afterwards. \nPlease note\, this is an introductory briefing and will give an overview of the upcoming programme of activities. There will be further detailed briefings in July about how to tender to deliver any of the training programmes outlined. \nTO REGISTER\nSTEP ONE\nPlease complete the monitoring form and you will be given a password to register for the briefing. DESCRIPTION:In January\, our Founder Tobi Oredein wrote a Founder’s Letter titled “Why Riches Are the Glamour\, Glitz\, and Black Drama We Deserve.” The show follows a British-Nigerian family running a multimillion-pound empire. It’s slick\, sexy\, and the right blend of drama\, scandal\, and humour in the right places. \nIt is the type of show that you *need* to watch with family or friends\, and the type of show you can watch more than once. So\, to celebrate Riches airing weekly on ITV1 from Friday 30th June at 9pm\, we’ve decided to organise a screening of the first episode at ODEON Luxe in Birmingham. \n*** \nLocation: ODEON Luxe\, Birmingham Broadway Plaza \nDate: Tuesday 27th June \nTime: 6.30 PM \n*** \nThis event is FREE for members. DESCRIPTION:Nubia Way screening and talk with co-producer James Thormod to explore self-building as a site of possibility and housing in the Black Imagination.\nAs part of MAIA’s exploration into how the Black Imagination can create portals and prototypes for sanctuary\, we’re honoured to host a screening of Nubia Way\, followed by a talk with its co-producer\, James Thormod. Nubia Way is a documentary film which details the story of Black-led self build housing in Lewisham during the 1990s. \nAfter the screening\, we’ll be delving into the connections between the film and the Lab\, such as self-builds as a site of possibility\, play\, housing and architecture in the Black Imagination. \nThis is a hybrid event\, running both online and at YARD between 6pm-8pm. Please note that there are separate in-person and Zoom tickets available. As always\, we have budget to support with access\, travel and childcare costs – please reach out to contact@maiagroup.co if you would like to make use of these. \n\n\n\n\nJames Thormod is an Architect practicing in East London\, with a particular interest in timber construction\, housing and self-build. In 2022\, in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation\, James co-produced and interviewed residents for a documentary of Nubia Way – a black-led self-build project in Downham\, Lewisham built in 1997. James’ interest in Nubia Way began by producing a paper titled ‘Nubia Way: Homebuilding as Black Resistance\,’ after a series of interviews with local residents and key stakeholders. James was published as part of the ‘Now You Know’ publication by Sound Advice\, which challenges discrimination in the built environment.

Interweaving archival photographs\, newsreel clips and home movie footage\, John Akomfrah’s award-winning film takes as its point of departure these violent events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonising the rioters and their motives. \nslow emergency siren\, ongoing: Accessing Handsworth Songs developed as a year-long collaboration\, co-led by LUX and Sarah Hayden\, as part of a research project called Voices in the Gallery. \nElaine Lillian Joseph was commissioned to write and perform augmented audio description for the film and invited the Care-fuffle Working Group to develop creative captions.
