Inclusion & Diversity in Animation & VFX

February 23 @ 8:00 am - 5:30 pm

A discussion around the findings of the September 2019 report from UK Screen Alliance, Animation UK and Access VFX on Inclusion & Diversity in UK Animation and Visual Effects. The report surveyed 1,150 individuals working in relevant sectors. The report documents a significantly higher percentage of ethnic diversity in VFX, post and animation than the overall level of diversity, or lack of it, within the wider film and TV industry. In VFX, people of colour make up 19% of the workforce. For animation, BAME representation is 14% and in post-production it is 18%. All three sectors exceed the 14% UK average percentage for people of colour in the working-age population. Closed captioning will be available during this event.
Hosted by Sharna Jackson with speakers including Tom Box (Blue Zoo/Animation Skills Council/Access VFX), Laura Henry-Allain MBE (Early Years Expert, author of the original Jo Jo and Gran Gran books and consultant on the CBeebies JoJo & Gran Gran series), and Maryam Mohajer (Grandad Was A Romantic, 2020 BAFTA winner, short animation). In addition to summarising the findings of the 2019 report, the panel will consider whether there has been an increased momentum for inclusivity; personal experiences in the industry and the links between on and off-screen representation. Jon Mason (Jollywise) will also join the panel to spotlight a new initiative – The Secret Story Draw – which will be providing opportunities and paid internships with the likes of Aardman, Blue Zoo, Double Negative, Factory, Hopster and Jellyfish.
