If you wish to film in the West Midlands (including photography) a permit will need to be acquired.

Filming During the Commonwealth Games

For the duration of the Commonwealth Games, we are issuing a blanket permit that gives permission to film exterior GV’s from public footpaths. 

This permit will entitle the user to film GV’s/B-roll on public footpaths, pavements, pedestrianised spaces, canal tow paths and in public places. It also includes the following locations within the Birmingham area (exteriors only):

  • Brindley Place
  • Arcadian
  • Jewellery Quarter
  • Mailbox 
  • Custard Factory

You will need to apply for a separate permit for each local authority area you wish to film in. Please use the following location name (eg CWG Birmingham) and postcode in your application

CWG Birmingham: B1 1BB

CWG Coventry: CV1 1FS

CWG Wolverhampton: WV1 3AX

CWG Sandwell: B70 7QZ

CWG Cannock: WS11 1WS

As part of your application, you must provide evidence of Public Liability Insurance (minimum £5 million cover) and a generic risk assessment that includes Covid protocols. Please allow 72 hours (not including weekends) for your application to be reviewed. Blanket film permits cost £65.

Exclusions:

  • These permits are NOT valid for filming events within CWG-controlled zones
  • They are intended for use by small crews filming General Views and B roll

The following locations are not covered by this permit and will require a separate application and a minimum of 48 hours notice:

  • Chamberlain Square 
  • Bullring/Grand Central 
  • Library of Birmingham Interior and Balconies 
  • Centenary Square 
  • Victoria Square
  • Birmingham City Council Parks
