Ray and Liz: Screening and Q+A

By Uncategorized No Comments

Fans of the BAFTA-nominated film “Ray and Liz” will be able to chat with its Birmingham-born director at an upcoming event.

The multi-award winning artist Richard Billingham returns to the striking photographs of his family during Thatcher-era Britain for this film. “Ray and Liz” is based on his own memories, focusing on his parents, their relationship, and its impact on their children. Within the film is some historical and regional detail, achieved most obviously through set design closely based on Billingham’s photographs. Sound and music are used to further orient us. We hear Musical Youth and Fine Young Cannibals — bands that originated in Birmingham.

This is Richard’s debut feature film, and it has gained a BAFTA nomination for ‘Outstanding Debut’. It has also won a string of festival awards, including three BIFA’s.

A screening will be held at Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham on 24 January, 2019 at 19:00. Afterwards, there will be a live onstage Q&A with Richard Billingham and Professor of Film and Television at Edge Hill University, Roger Shannon FRSA.

Tickets cost £8.10 – £9.00 and can be booked here.

Video Assist Trainees Wanted for ScreenSkills Trainee Finder

By Uncategorized No Comments

ScreenSkills still has space on its prestigious Trainee Finder programme for video assist trainees. This opportunity would suit someone who is technically minded with an understanding of camera and formats.

Video assist operators (VAO) check the compatibility of playback systems, recording units, trolleys, batteries and external monitors with film cameras and arrive on set with the camera crew to test equipment. They are usually employed by camera equipment hire companies. Video assist trainees help VAOs with cables and general support on set.

ScreenSkills is looking for talented individuals from across the UK with less than 12 months paid experience. You should clearly demonstrate a passion and commitment for working in film or high-end TV by providing evidence of experience or transferable skills for your selected department. You must also be able to provide two references.

Applications are welcomed from individuals who have attended ScreenSkills funded boot camps and events, such as Open Doors, as well as partner schemes such as the BFI Film Academy.

Trainee Finder promotes inclusivity in the film and high-end TV drama workforce. ScreenSkills is also committed to diversity and equality of opportunity in all aspects of its work, so applications from under-represented groups are encouraged.

  • Have fewer than 12 months, relevant, paid experience in their chosen department and genre
  • Be available for placements offered during the program
  • Be open and flexible to consider opportunities across the UK
  • Demonstrate an interest in and commitment to the department you select

  • If you are in full-time education at the time of applying, you must have graduated from your course by 1 April 2019
  • Failure to provide evidence of your right to remain in the UK may result in the training placement being withdrawn
  • All successful video assist trainees must attend a two or three-day induction event in March in preparation for the scheme.

We will work to help and put you forward for any placements you express interest in, but it is the decision of the production which trainees are selected. So we encourage you to remain proactive in finding your own work, and not rely only on the scheme.
