Work with Professionals from the BBC on 'Free Speech'

Posted on 19 February 2013

BBC Learning runs The Lab – a small production unit that makes film content with groups for broadcast on BBC outlets.

18 – 26 years old and in Birmingham?

The Lab is looking to run a five day media-literacy learning experience with a group of 18 -26 year olds from Birmingham. (Likely to start the week beginning Monday March 11th but TBC). Each day will run from 10am – 4pm.

Participants should be available for the duration of the workshop and within the 18-26 age range.

Opportunity to work with BBC Learning to make 2 short films

The aim of the workshop is to give the participants an understanding of the process of making a short film for television. The group will work with BBC professionals and camera crew to help make two short films for the BBC Three show Free Speech – this includes learning camera skills, opportunities to appear on screen, scripting, being on location for filming and editing. The films may also feature other young people who are not part of the group but have interesting opinions or stories that would be good to include in the films.

Free Speech is a live debate show for young adults; it’s broadcast from a different city every month, presented by Rick Edwards. March’s show will be broadcast from Birmingham later that month on March 27th.

One of the films we produce will be broadcast on BBC3 as part of the live Free Speech show from Birmingham. The other will go up on the Free Speech website. The studio show is made by independent production company Mentorn Media, who will be involved in the selection of all topics, subjects and scripts. All of the young people who help to make the films will be invited to be in the studio audience in Birmingham.

The week’s schedule will look roughly like this:

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3
