National Young People’s Film Makers and Producers Documentary Lab

Birmingham Ormiston Academy, with support from First Light and the BFI, is launching a new pilot training lab which will concentrate on documentary film making and producing for 18-19 year olds. This is a pilot summer residential, funded by the BFI, and based at BOA – a brand new purpose built academy for the creative, digital and performing arts based in Birmingham city centre.

Residential Documentary Filmmaking Lab for 18-19 year olds

BOA is looking to nurture enthusiastic, committed young people with a fresh take on documentary filmmaking and factual content that is currently not being reflected on the screen. Perhaps you have an idea for a documentary? Do you have passion and an insight into the subject? Could you help an audience see the world through someone else’s eyes?

This is a unique opportunity for new entrants who have a strong interest in documentaries, to meet and work with experienced professionals working in the sector.

The Lab will include:

  • Developing skills and knowledge with industry experts on documentary film making and styles of shooting.
  • Learning how to research ideas, and work as a team to shoot, edit and screen an original documentary
  • Technical skills for filming and editing.
  • Script development focusing on structure and story.
  • Exploring production roles.
  • Information, advice and careers guidance from experts in the film and creative industries

5 Days in August

The Lab will be held at BOA in Birmingham for 5 consecutive days (week beginning 6th August 2012). If you are selected, your accommodation and meals will be covered for the Lab. programme; there is a limited number of travel bursaries available for those people who can demonstrate need.

Application Criteria:

  • You must be aged between 18 -19 years old
  • The Lab is open to anyone; however we are particularly looking for applications from new entrants under-represented in the industry, e.g. women, young people from BME backgrounds, and those with disabilities.
  • Be available to attend from 6th – 10th August 2012 inclusive.

To apply for a place please complete all sections of the application form and return to BOA by email together with a current CV to Pepita.hanna@boa-academy.co.uk or post to:
