FLIP International Animation Festival returns to Light House Media Centre in Wolverhampton on 4 – 6 November 2010. FLIP is an eclectic mix of all things animation. Based in the heart of the Midlands the festival provides a wide range of experiences from educational workshops for young people to experimental animation for grown ups; from industry led panels to feature film screenings and from international showcases and retrospectives of short films to spotlights on animation studios. A host of special guests are currently being put together to feature at the festival including Clare Kitson, the first Commissioning Editor for Animation at Channel 4, and Andy Gent, Head of Puppets on the recent film The Fantastic Mr Fox. For more information about FLIP visit www.flipfestival.co.uk.
During this year’s festival leading animators and media practitioners will talk about their favourite films which have influenced and inspired them. Clare Kitson will introduce her favourite animated shorts, spanning Chuck Jones to Yuri Norstein. Clare was the first Commissioning Editor for Animation at Channel 4 and has written extensively on British Animation. FLIP is also excited to welcome puppet maker Andy Gent, who was Head of Puppets on the Oscar nominated The Fantastic Mr Fox. Andy has also worked at Liaka, Warner Bros and Passion Pictures and is currently involved in the new Tim Burton production, Frankenweenie. Visitors to FLIP will be able to view an exhibition of Andy’s puppet work from his films including The Fantastic Mr Fox and The Corpse Bride.
FLIP has now closed the call for submissions for this year’s festival and has received over 250 films from the UK and all over the world, including Argentina, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Croatia, Greece, Poland, Sweden, Israel, Canada, Australia, Japan and Singapore.
Festival Coordinator Peter McLuskie said, “We are really pleased with the selection of films we have received from animators all over the world, from places as diverse as Macau, Finland and Brazil! We are really looking forward to selecting the best and screening the winning films during the weekend. We also have some great prizes on offer for the awards categories from our festival sponsors Toon Boom and Stop Motion Pro.”
